What is a portable aggregate moisture content meter?
An aggregate moisture content meter is a precision instrument that measures the percentage of water present in construction aggregates — sand, gravel, crushed stone, and grit — directly in the stockpile or field. It gives engineers and plant operators real-time moisture data without stopping production for lab tests.
In concrete batching and asphalt production, moisture in aggregates directly affects the water-to-cement (w/c) ratio. Even a 1–2% variation in moisture content can lead to weaker mixes, inconsistent batch quality, wasted cement, and failed quality control checks. Traditional oven-drying methods take several hours and are impractical for real-time production decisions. A portable aggregate moisture content meter solves this by delivering accurate readings in seconds, directly on-site.

The Seztec HD2® aggregate moisture meter
The Seztec HD2® is a complete portable aggregate moisture measurement system. It consists of two components that work together.
The SONO M1® is the probe. You insert it directly into your stockpile or sample. It uses TRIME® TDR technology to measure moisture content through a volume of approximately 1 liter of material, not just the surface layer.
The HD2® is the handheld display unit. It powers the probe, receives the measurement signal, and displays gravimetric moisture (%), temperature, and electrical conductivity. You get individual readings and a running average on the same screen.
Together the system gives you a complete moisture reading in approximately 2 seconds.

How the Seztec HD2® measures aggregate moisture content
The SONO M1® probe uses TRIME® Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). When you insert the probe into an aggregate stockpile or lab sample, it sends an electromagnetic pulse through approximately 1 liter of surrounding material and measures the response.
That volume measurement is the key difference between TDR and cheaper surface-contact devices. Surface readers pick up whatever moisture happens to be at the top of your stockpile. If the surface is drier or wetter than the bulk of the material, your reading will not reflect actual batch conditions.
The SONO M1® probe reaches deep enough that surface variation has minimal effect on the result. The HD2® display applies the pre-loaded material calibration and shows your reading in about 2 seconds.
It works reliably in wet sand, compacted material, mixed stockpiles, and highly conductive materials like clay, foundry sand, and slag.

Three parameters in one reading
Gravimetric moisture (%), temperature, and electrical conductivity — individual readings and running average shown simultaneously.

Seztec HD2® aggregate moisture meter vs. oven drying
Both methods produce accurate moisture readings. The difference is time and practicality.
| Method | Time to result | Field use | Real-time decisions | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oven drying | Several hours | Not practical | Not possible | High |
| Seztec HD2® | ~2 seconds | Yes | Yes | High (±0.2%) |
Oven drying remains useful in a laboratory setting where you need a reference measurement. For a batching plant or quarry making production decisions throughout the day, a portable aggregate moisture meter is the only practical option.

Aggregate moisture meter applications by industry
Concrete production
Ready-mix batching plants, precast concrete facilities, and quality control labs use the HD2® to verify aggregate moisture before every batch. Keeping the w/c ratio within specification is easier when you know the actual moisture content of your sand and gravel before the material enters the mixer.
Asphalt and paving
Asphalt batching plants use the HD2® to check aggregate moisture before heating and mixing. RAP (Recycled Asphalt Pavement) moisture varies significantly between stockpiles and weather conditions. A quick field reading before batching helps avoid temperature and compaction issues in the final mix.
Aggregate quarrying and processing
Quarries supplying concrete producers often need to provide moisture data with their aggregate shipments. The HD2® lets quarry operators check moisture directly in stockpiles and provide accurate figures to customers without sending every sample to a lab.
Industrial materials
For highly conductive materials including foundry sand, clay, ore, slag, and coal, the SONO M1C® probe variant is the appropriate choice. Contact Seztec USA to confirm which probe configuration works for your specific material.
Who needs a portable aggregate moisture content meter?
The HD2® is used regularly by concrete plant managers, QC engineers, asphalt plant operators, aggregate producers, ready-mix supervisors, and precast manufacturers.
If your production process depends on consistent aggregate quality and you are currently relying on oven drying or visual estimation for moisture data, a portable aggregate moisture meter is worth evaluating.

Seztec HD2® aggregate moisture meter — frequently asked questions
How accurate is the Seztec HD2® aggregate moisture content meter? The HD2® system delivers ±0.2% accuracy and ±0.3% repeatability using TRIME® TDR technology. That level of precision is appropriate for production-grade batching decisions in concrete and asphalt plants.
Does the HD2® need calibration before first use? No. It ships pre-calibrated for 15 common aggregate types and is ready to use immediately. Custom material calibrations can be added if your specific aggregate falls outside the standard range.
What aggregate sizes can the SONO M1® probe handle? The SONO M1® probe works with aggregates up to 1¼” (32mm). For larger coarse aggregates, abrasive materials, or RAP, ask Seztec USA about the SONO VARIO Xtrem® — a fixed online probe built for those conditions.
Can it measure moisture in wet or compacted stockpiles? Yes. Because the TRIME® TDR technology measures through approximately 1 liter of material per reading, it handles uneven moisture distribution and compacted or wet surface conditions that cause surface-contact meters to read inaccurately.
What does free lifetime support mean in practice? It means Seztec USA’s application engineers in Houston will help you with technical questions, calibration guidance, and troubleshooting for as long as you own the instrument. No support contract is required and there is no expiry date.
What is the difference between the SONO M1® and the HD2®? The SONO M1® is the probe. It goes into the material and contains the TRIME® TDR sensing technology. The HD2® is the handheld display unit that powers the probe and shows the reading. The complete system includes both components.
Is this the same product as the IMKO TRIME HD2? Yes. The Seztec HD2® aggregate moisture meter is the IMKO TRIME HD2® system. Seztec USA is the authorized US distributor for IMKO moisture measurement products and provides full US-based sales and support for the system.
